Over most of its course it meanders through flat, wooded terrain with high rainfall at an altitude of about 400 to 500 m west-northwest direction. In the last 80 km it forms the border between South Sudan and Ethiopia. The river loses nearly a quarter of its water between Gambela and the mouth in the Machar Marshes through evaporation.
