Başakşehir is a district of the Turkish province of İstanbul as well as a district on the European side of İstanbul. The county had Başakşehir according to the last census, 207 542 inhabitants (as at end December 2008).

History

The historical name of the district was in the Ottoman Empire Azatlık. During the wars and battles the Ottomans brought gunpowder for their projectiles from this district. Since Azatlık was dominated by agriculture and many farms were available, the district was later named Resneli Çiftliği ( "Farm Resneli "). The Ottoman military Ahmed Niyazi Bey, who played an important role in the Young Turk revolution, had in Başakşehir a farm, which is located there today.

The land around the farm developed in the later years to city blocks. The region continued to grow and it came more and more quarters. İstanbul first settlements lie in Başakşehir and originated in the Yarımburgaz cave in Altınşehir quarter on the way to Kayabaşı. In the Paleolithic cave was the property of the natives. The former municipality was incorporated in Bahçeşehir Başakşehir 2009.
