Basilica of San Gaudenzio

The Basilica of San Gaudenzio is a Roman Catholic church in the Italian Novara in Piedmont.

History

The church was built between 1577-1690 on the highest point of Novara. The design of the church was made by Pellegrino Tibaldi. He made a strong plasticity. The entrance to the Basilica has monumental dimensions, the door of walnut and cast iron is the work of Alessandro Antonelli.

Architecture

The bell tower is 92 meters high and was built in 1753-1786 by Benedetto Alfieri. He stands on the left side of the apse, it was built of brick and granite of Baveno.

The old tower was demolished because of damage to the buildings caused by vibrations of the bell were caused. In 1753 it was decided to build a new tower. The work was set in 1773 for lack of funds. In 1786 the work was completed on the tower. The bell tower houses eight bells in G major. In 1987, the bells were set to stop the cracks.

The dome

The architectural feature of the church is designed by Alessandro Antonelli 121 meter high dome, the city's symbol, visible from all roads. A meat control in the first half of the 18th century saw to it that were ready funds for the construction of a dome. The first presented in 1841 design was not realized because of the war.

Equipment

The organ was built in 1949 by the organ builder Vincenzo Mascioni. The instrument has 56 registers on three manual and pedal works. The Traktruren electrically.
