Bastrop is a city and the county seat ( county seat ) of Bastrop County in the U.S. state of Texas in the United States of America.

Geography

The city is located in the central southeast Texas and has a total area of 18.9 km ², of which 0.1 km ² water surface. The distance to Austin in the northwest is about 50 km to San Antonio in the Southwest about 160 km and Houston in the east about 300 km.

Demography

According to the census of 2000, there were 5340 people in 2034 households and 1336 families. The population density was 283.6 inhabitants per km ². Ethnically, the population itself is composed of 72.34 % White, 17.00% Black or African American, 0.99 % Asian, 0.73 % Native American, 0.00% residents from the Pacific Islander, and 7.02 % from other ethnic groups. Approximately 1.91% are descended from two or more races and 17.75% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 2034 households 32.8 % had children under the age of 18 living with them. 46.6 % were married couples living together. 15.3% were single mothers and 34.3% were non-families. 29.4 % of all households were single-person households, and 12.6% had someone living alone who were 85 years or older. The average household size was 2.46 and the average family size is 3.05.

25.5% of the population were under 18 years old, 8.3 % from 18 to 24, 29.6% 25-44, 21.8 % from 45 to 64, and 14.8 % who were 65 years or older. The average age was 36 years. For every 100 females of all ages were 97.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, 91.2 males.

The median income for a household was $ 40,212, and the median income for a family $ 49,258. Males have a median income of $ 34,388 versus $ 27,582 for females. The per capita income was $ 19,862. 11.7 % of the population and 10.1 % of families are below the poverty line. Of which 15.6 % have children under the age of 18 and 13.6 % of those 65 or older.

The crime rate has an index of 688.2 points. (Compare U.S. national average: 329.7 points) 2003, there were two murders, 15 rapes, 7 robberies, 3 assaults on persons, 59 burglaries, 492 thefts and 28 car thefts.
