Bátovce

Bátovce ( German woman market, Hungarian Bát ) is a municipality in western Slovakia. It is situated in the basin Bátovská kotlina the river Sikenica, about 14 km from Levice.

History

The community was described indirectly in the 11th century, but was first mentioned in writing in 1267 as a villa Bat. The place was quickly granted the city rights and was later raised to free royal town. German colonists operated here mining; However, the development of Turkish invasions, poor income from mining and parallel operated viticulture was stopped. The German population migrated or was slowakisiert. 1876, the city of a free royal city was downgraded to simple village. Until 1918 the town was the seat of the chair district administration within the Hungarian Hont county.

The municipality also includes the south to the district Jalakšová; this was incorporated in 1944. From 1895 to 1972, also Kmeťovce, since 1973 a part of the municipality of Drženice, a part of the place.

The German name of the town is said to derive from the occupation under the Turks; this exaggerated here in the village, the women from the area together and sold them as slaves.
