Battistello Caracciolo

Giovanni Battista Caracciolo, called Battistello, (* 1578 in Naples, † 1635 ) was a Neapolitan painter of the Baroque in the footsteps of Caravaggio.

Life

He went with Francesco Imperato (around 1520-1570 ) in teaching. Caracciolo was heavily influenced by Caravaggio, who was in Naples in 1606 / 07 and again briefly 1609/10, but there left a big impression. Besides Caracciolo Jusepe de Ribera, Carlo Sellitto, Artemisia Gentileschi and Caracciolo 's student Mattia Preti were among the Neapolitan Caravaggists. When his masterpiece, the exemption of Peter from 1608/ 09 for the church Pio Monte della Misericordia, for the 1607 Caravaggio painted the seven acts of mercy. In 1614 he visited Rome in 1618 and Genoa, Rome and Florence. He came under the influence of classical Ludovico Carracci and his cousins ​​( Bolognese School ), which marked his later work, such as the washing of the feet of frescoes in the monastery in 1622 Certosa di San Martino in Naples.
