Carlo Sellitto

Carlo Sellitto (* 1581 in Naples, † in the night from October 1 to October 2, 1614 in Naples), was a Neapolitan painter of the Baroque in the footsteps of Caravaggio.

Sellitto 's real name was Carlo Infantino and took a stage name the maiden name of the mother, who was from Naples. He was the son of a painter ( Sebastiano Infantino ) from Montemurro in the Basilicata region. He met briefly at the Piedmonteser painter Giovanni Antonio Ardito and from 1591 at the Flemish painter Louis Croy. In 1608 he founded his own workshop. He was in Naples as a portrait painter desires (in which he was trained at Croy ) and one of the earliest Caravaggists - be John the Baptist was painted several years before Caravaggio 1606/ 07 Naples visited. Later he was influenced by Guido Reni, who visited 1611/12 Naples.

In addition to portraits and religious subjects, he also painted still lifes and genre scenes. From this aspect of his work ( and his portraits ) but get nothing.

A Bacchus by him is in the Städel Art Institute in Frankfurt am Main.

He was for a time with Claudia Croy, daughter of his teaching Lord, engaged, married in 1613 but Portia Pirrone from Montemurro.

He also had the original contract for the masterpiece of Battistello Caracciolo, the liberation of Peter, but it was not because of his untimely death after a short illness run.
