Beichuan Qiang Autonomous County
The Autonomous District Beichuan Qiang (Chinese北 川 羌族 自治县, Pinyin Beichuan Qiāngzú Zizhixian ) is an autonomous county of Qiang in the Chinese province of Sichuan. He belongs to the administrative area of the prefecture-level city of Mianyang. It has an area of 2867.83 square kilometers and counts a population of 160,000 ( 2004). Seat of government is the greater community Qushan (Chinese曲 山镇, Pinyin Qushan zhen ).
The people of the Qiang lives in Sichuan otherwise mainly in the districts of Mao, Wenchuan, Li, Heishui and Sungqu ( Songpan ), all belonging to the autonomous district Ngawa the Tibetan and Qiang.
Beichuan is on the river Tongkou He (通 口 河), a tributary of the Fu Jiang (涪江). The river Jianjiang (湔 江, Jian Jiang ) and the rivers Baicao He (白草 河), Qingpian He (青 片 河), Duba He (都 坝河) Subao He (苏 宝 河) and Pingtong He (平 通河) flow through its territory. Four large valleys are Xiaozhaizigou (小寨 子沟) Taibaigou (太白 沟) Houyuangou (后 园 沟) and Bainigou (白 坭 沟).
The Sichuan earthquake 12 May 2008 triggered a landslide above Beichuan that blocked a river, so that formed a lake. Fearing a dam break thousands of residents were evacuated.

Beichuan is composed of three large municipalities, seventeen municipalities, one of a (different) national minority together ( the Tibetans ).
