Wenchuan County

Wenchuan (Chinese汶川县, Pinyin Wenchuan Xiàn ) is a district in the southeast of the Autonomous Prefecture of Tibetan and Qiang Ngawa in the Chinese province of Sichuan. Its main town is the large village Weizhou (威 州镇). It lies on the northwestern edge of the Sichuan Basin in the upper reaches of the Min River (Min Jiang).

The county has an area of ​​4,084 square kilometers and is one of 106 119 inhabitants ( 2005).

On 12 May 2008 the area was the epicenter of a major earthquake.

In the large village lies the Wolong Giant Panda Research Center (大熊猫 研究 中心, Daxiongmao yanjiu zhongxin ) and opened in 2002 China Wolong Giant Panda Museum (中国 卧龙 大熊猫 博物馆, Zhongguo Wolong Daxiongmao Bowuguan ).

The Neolithic sites of Yingpanshan ( circle Mao ( Ngawa ) ) and Jiangweicheng ( Wenchuan ) ( Yingpanshan he Jiangweicheng Yizhi (营盘 山 和 姜维 城 遗址)) of Yingpanshan culture (营盘 山 文化) are since 2006 on the list of monuments of the People's Republic of China ( 6-177 ).
