Benedetto Pamphili

Benedetto Pamphili, also Pamphilij or Pamphili, ( born April 25, 1653 Rome, † March 22, 1730 ) was an Italian cardinal, librettist and composer.

Family

Benedetto Pamphili came from the noble family of the Pamphili family from Umbria. His father, a nephew of Pope Innocent X ( Giovanni Battista Pamphili ), was the former Cardinal Camillo Francesco Maria Pamphili, 1647 his cardinalate to marry Olimpia Aldobrandini, Princess of Rossano and widow of the prematurely deceased Paolo Borghese ( 1622-1642 ), gave up and had to leave at the urging of his mother Olimpia Maidalchini Rome.

Life

Pope Innocent XI. appointed him in 1678 to the Grand Prior of Rome of the Sovereign Order of Malta; He was a member of the Equestrian Order of the Holy grave in Jerusalem. He was appointed on September 1, 1681 to cardinal deacon with the title of Santa Maria in Campitelli and was ordained a priest on December 24, 1684. This was followed by the title Sant'Agata dei Goti Churches (1685 /89), San Cesareo in Palatio, Santa Maria in Cosmedin (1686 /88), Santa Agata alla Suburra ( 1688/1693 ) and Santa Maria in Via Lata ( 1693/1730 ). He was archpriest of Santa Maria Maggiore (1694/1699) and the Lateran Basilica ( 1699/1730 ). He also worked for the Vatican Secret Archives (1704/1730) and the Vatican Library ( 1704/1730 ).

In 1685 he was appointed Prefect of the Apostolic Signatura. From 1693 to 1730 he was a deacon of the College of Cardinals. He participated in the conclave of 1689, 1691, 1700, 1721 and 1724.

Benedetto Pamphili was a significant personalities of culture and arts of Rome in the 17th and 18th century ( Palazzo Doria Pamphili - ), especially as a patron of music. He was the author of numerous oratorio librettos, sonnets and secular cantata texts, some of which he also set to music himself.

For Handel's oratorio Il two-part trionfo del Tempo e del Disinganno (HWV 46a) dates from 1707 no premiere is detectable, therefore, is the establishment of this performance into the Collegio Germanico in Rome, as is often claimed, pure speculation.
