Benedict Stilling

Benedict (also: Benedict ) Stilling ( born February 22, 1810 in church grove; † 28 January 1879 in Kassel) was a German physician.

Life

From 1828 to 1832 Stilling studied medicine in Marburg. In 1833 he worked with Christoph Ullmann ( 1772-1849 ), then finished first but his academic career and worked as a doctor at the Kassel district court.

When he should be forcibly transferred in 1840 (possibly because he had acquired as a Jew too much influence ), he resigned and went first to Paris, where he met with various famous doctors of his time, such as with Claude Bernard, Charles- Édouard Brown - Sequard and Jean -Martin Charcot. He spent most of his life in different cities ( along with Paris and London, Edinburgh and Vienna), but returned always returns to Kassel, where he died.

Stilling created new surgical techniques developed anatomical techniques and examined the brain. He introduced in 1837 the first ovariotomy in Germany, to prevent internal bleeding extraperitoneal, its publication was published about 1841. A long time he was the only one in Germany, which dominated this operation. He developed 1842, the freezing method and was one of the pioneers of Mikrotomentwicklung. After Stilling the Stilling - channel is named, a narrow passage in the vitreous body of the eye between the blind spot and the eye lens.

The pathologist Heinrich Stilling and the ophthalmologist Jakob Stilling were his sons.
