Benesh Movement Notation

Choreology (English Benesh Movement Notation ) is a dance notation, are recorded in the dance movements in a system of staves.

The Choreology was developed by the Czech painter and musician Rudolf Benesh and his wife Joan Benesh in the late 1940s in England and patented in 1955. Actually, the term refers to the choreography written record of dances; since this term but was already at that time used as a synonym for defining the movements of a dance piece, Benesh chose for his patent instead Choreology.

The notation is based on the well known from the music system of staves and barlines. The lines correspond from top to bottom of the head, the shoulders, the hips, the knees and the feet of the dancer, in the means of abstract symbols, the dimensions and quality of the dance movements are located. The notation system offers the advantage that it can be combined with a musical score in order to clarify the synchronization of music and dance.

The Choreology is maintained by the Benesh Institute, which merged in 1997 with the Royal Academy of Dance.

With the Choreology ballets were written down for the first time. It is one of the most popular dance notations, and is now used in physiotherapy, choreography and as a teaching aid of the Royal Academy of Dance.
