Benson Mhlongo

Benson Mhlongo ( born November 9, 1980 in Alexandra, Johannesburg ) is a South African football player.

Club career

Mhlongo learned the game of soccer on the streets of his township of Alexandra. After working at the second division Alexandra United and City Sharks, he came in 2001 to the first division Wits University. By 2005, when the club relegated from the Premier Soccer League, Mhlongo stayed with the Wits, greatest achievement in this period was the finals in the ABSA Cup 2005, where, however, SuperSport United was defeated 0-1.

Mhlongo joined after descending the Mamelodi Sundowns and was on the defensive to the key players of the Brazilians in the two league titles in 2006 and 2007. 2008 he left the club after his contract extension dragged on at the Sundowns over weeks, and switched to a free transfer Orlando Pirates. While Mhlongo came mainly in central defense for use in Mamelodi, he plays in the Pirates mostly as a defensive midfielder, his preferred position.

National

Mhlongo was in June 2003 in a friendly against Trinidad and Tobago his debut in the South African national team. 2004 and 2008 he was part of the squad for the African Cup of Nations, resigned with his team but in each case in the preliminary round of. In May 2009, Mhlongo was appointed to the provisional squad for the Confederations Cup in their own country.
