Beringovsky (inhabited locality)

Beringowski (Russian Беринговский, Chukchi Гачгатагын / Gatschgatagyn ) is an urban-type settlement in the Autonomous District of the Chukchi in the extreme northeast of Russia. She has ( as of October 14, 2010 ) 1401 inhabitants.

Geography

The center of the settlement is located about five kilometers from the Ugolny Bay ( "Coal Bay " ) is removed, the south-east of the administrative center of the Autonomous Okrug Anadyr is located at the southern exit of the Anadyr Bay of the Bering Sea, about 200 kilometers in a straight line. Beringowski is the easternmost town in Russia, which still belongs to the Eastern Hemisphere. Just north of the village stands the Cape Barykin into the sea, which defines the Ugolny Bay and is the utmost point of a steeply rising to over 500 meters high mountain train.

Beringowski belongs to Anadyrski whose administrative headquarters is also Anadyr.

History

The settlement owes its existence to coal reserves, which were discovered in the 1930s. The place Beringowski was established adjacent to the coast in 1937 and initially called Ugolny (such as " coal - development" ) ( Lage63.0625179.35416666667 ). Coal mining began in 1941; the transport from the mine to the port was initially by a narrow gauge railway.

1946 Ugolny received the status of an urban-type settlement. With spin-off of Rajons Beringowski in 1957 the settlement was the administrative center and how Rajon named after the explorer Vitus Bering.

Over time, the town center shifted into the resulting near the mine settlement (such as " Mountain Settlement " ) in the 1960s, also urban-type settlement was under the name Nagorny. In the 1970s, Nagorno Beringowski overhauled by population, and the Rajonverwaltung was moved in 1975 to there. In the 1990s, both settlements were united under the name Beringowski; the original settlement Beringowski the harbor is virtually uninhabited today. On 30 May 2008, the Rajon Beringowski and the north then Rajon Anadyr were combined to form a new Rajon Zentralny ( " Central Raion "). Beringowski thus lost its function as the administrative center of the former center of the Rajons Anadyr Ugolnyje Kopi. Since 18 November 2008, the new Rajon again bears the Anadyr.

Economy and infrastructure

The main industry is coal mining. The mine has however made in 2009 due to financial difficulties, the production one. There is also a Construction Management and a brewery.

The settlement has a seaport, but can not be started directly from larger vessels. The transportation of coal and other goods between the port and vessels shall with barges. Six kilometers southeast of the present settlement center is located on a spit on the banks of Ugolny Bay Airport ( ICAO code UHMR ), which is served by Chukotavia of Anadyr from.

The narrow gauge railway between coal mine and the port was in the 1980s, replaced by a conveyor belt system. Street connection between the neighborhoods of the settlement, to the airport and about 20 kilometers west village located Alkatwaam.
