Bernard Griffin

Bernard William Cardinal Griffin ( born February 21, 1899 in Birmingham, England; † August 20, 1956 in New Polzeath, Cornwall) was Archbishop of Westminster.

Life

Bernard William Griffin studied at Birmingham and Rome, the subjects philosophy and Catholic theology. He received on 1 November 1924, the sacrament of Holy Orders and, after further studies in 1927, personal secretary to the Archbishop of Birmingham. In the years 1929 to 1938 he also worked as diocesan chancellor, scientists and broadcasting consultant. From 1937 to 1943 he was entrusted with the management of the diocesan welfare accommodation.

1938 Pope Pius XI appointed him. Titular Bishop of Appia and Suffragan Bishop in Birmingham, in 1943 he transferred Pope Pius XII. the management of the Archdiocese of Westminster. Bernard William Griffin was accepted as a cardinal priest with the titular church of Santi Andrea e Gregorio al Monte Celio in the College of Cardinals on February 18, 1946.

Bernard William Cardinal Griffin was the first Grand Prior of the Lieutenancy of England and Wales of the Equestrian Order of the Holy grave in Jerusalem.

He died on August 20, 1956 in New Polzeath and was buried in the Cathedral of Westminster.
