Bernhard II, Duke of Saxe-Jena

Bernhard of Saxe- Jena (* February 21, 1638 in Weimar, † May 3, 1678 in Jena ) was the first Duke of the independent duchy of Saxe -Jena.

Life

Bernard was the son of Duke Wilhelm of Saxe- Weimar and Eleonore Dorothea, a princess of Anhalt and was born the seventh of nine children in Weimar.

He visited from February 1654 to November 1657, the University of Jena. Then the prince went first to France, where he was marrying the French court after his father's plans to strengthen the relations of Ernestiner for Sun King Louis XIV. However, the French king ordered the young prince felt its insignificance, by letting him wait a half years for an audience.

The internships in France in 1662 led eventually to his marriage to Marie Charlotte ( 1630-1682 ), daughter of Henri de La Trémoille, duc de Thouars. ( Which was demolished in 1905 ) Bernhard and his magnificent loving wife moved into the castle built by the Duke residence in Jena, Weimar court orchestra brought there and privileged the first newspaper in Thuringia.

Under the company name The following he was admitted as a member of the literary Fruitbearing society.

In 1672, he shared with his two brothers, his paternal inheritance, Sachsen -Jena was separated as an independent duchy of Saxe- Weimar and handed over to Bernard. The marriage of the Duke remained well of unhappiness, but not drawn by childlessness.

Bernhard also had a daughter born out of wedlock with Marie Elisabeth of Kospoth:
