Bernhard Rothmann

Bernd Rothmann, Bernhard Rottmann (* 1495 in city wage at Münster; † probably after 1535) was the chief minister of the so-called Anabaptists in Münster. As the intellectual head he was, next to the Chancellor Heinrich Krechting and the cupbearer Wolter Schemering, one of the few leading figures who could apparently fled after the attack of the city of Münster by the besieging Catholic Bishop Franz von Waldeck. Rothmann or whose body was certainly not found in the stormed city; but it also lacks any trace of Rothmann after in 1535.

Life

Rothmann had first the preacher Office at the Church of St. Mauritz, and then at St. Lamberti held in Münster.

He tried several reformatory directions, before turning to the embossed by Melchior Hofmann Anabaptism. As Zwinglians he shared the sacrament in the form of mares, which earned him the nickname mare Bernd.

In 1534 he published a paper ( Bekentones of Globens and life of the common Christe to Monster), the so became widespread that the native of Pente secretary to the Duke of Brunswick- Lüneburg, Wichmann ( Wichmannus Bramescanus ) a refutation of Munsterites Newen Valentinians and Donatists bekanntnis prompted to prevent a further strengthening of Wiedertäufertums for Christians to Osnabrück jnn Westphalia.
