Berthold Lasker

Jonathan Bertold ( Berthold ) Lasker ( born December 31, 1860 in Berlinchen, Neumark, † October 19, 1928 in Berlin) was a German chess master, doctor and writer. He was married in first marriage to Else Lasker-Schüler and a brother of the world chess champion Emanuel Lasker.

Biography

Bertold Lasker was the son of a (Jewish) Kantor and grandson of a respected rabbi. In Berlin he attended high school and graduated in 1879 Werdersche the Abitur. From 1881 to 1888 he studied medicine at the University of Berlin. Temporarily he made up for about a year as a doctor in Elberfeld resident, where he met his future first wife Else Lasker-Schüler. After marriage in 1894 the couple lived in Berlin, where Lasker settled down as a specialist in skin and bone diseases. The marriage with the well-known poet was unhappy. In 1899 a son was born, with Lasker-Schüler paternity Bertolds denied in court, which the district court appeared credible. Lasker-Schüler accused her husband of violence, the marriage was divorced in 1903. Bertold Lasker went to the beginning of the century to a longer stay in the United States. Without success, he tried to open a second practice in New York. Then Lasker lived permanently in Berlin. He died in 1928 just a few months after the death of his second wife, Regina.

Chess successes

In the 1880s, Lasker addition of Curt Bardeleben, the Berlin student Siegbert Tarrasch, Fritz Riemann, Emil Schallopp and Theodor von Scheve counted among the strongest chess players of Berlin, and thus the whole of Germany. Tarrasch, Lasker called a " very brilliant player whose strength is unfortunately rarely gets as a result of his nervousness in a tournament to its proper scope ."

Lasker played a series of tournaments in Berlin: In 1881, he won ahead of Tarrasch, 1890, he shared " after an obstinate tie-break " with his brother Emanuel the first place (before Horatio Caro and Theodor von Scheve ) at the " Tournament of the Association of German chess master ", in 1891 he finished second after Horatio Caro. During his time in the U.S. Bert (h ) old Lasker won the 1902 Championship of the State of New York.

Bertold and Emanuel Lasker

Bertolds chess historical main importance lies in the fact that he, zoom led his eight -years-younger brother Emanuel, who lived in the 1880s with him in Berlin at the game and the chess scene. Emanuel Lasker was then 1894-1921 World Chess Champion. Bertold Lasker had long-span interests and great knowledge in the fields of philosophy, art and comparative linguistics research. With his brother, he wrote in 1925, the play Man history. The drama never mentioned is described in the literature as "deeply moral, thoughtful heavy piece ".
