Beşiktaş is a district of the Turkish province of Istanbul and at the same time a district on the European side of İstanbul. Beşiktaş had, according to the Turkish Statistical Institute 186 067 inhabitants (as at end December 2012).

Beşiktaş is divided into 23 districts ( Turkish: Mahalle ), including the famous district Arnavutköy, Bebek, Etiler, Levent and Ortaköy.

Etiler is one of the most expensive residential and office districts. Here is Akmerkez, one of the largest shopping malls in İstanbul.

The neighboring Levent in the northwest of Beşiktaş has evolved into a center for corporate and bank headquarters since the 1990s. The cityscape is dominated by high-rise buildings.

Ortaköy ( "middle village" ), north of the Yildiz park right at the 1.Bosporus Bridge, one of the most popular with tourists pub and restaurant quarters of Istanbul. Were still alive in the 1950s there almost only Armenian families. There were numerous Armenian churches and many Armenian schools. Culture and sights

The famous football club Beşiktaş Istanbul tradition comes from this district. The official name of this club is the gymnastics club Beşiktaş (Beşiktaş Jimnastik Kulübü ) and is abbreviated BJK. Also the Inonu Stadium is located here. Another, but rather rare name for the stadium is the Dolmabahçe Stadium because of the historic Dolmabahçe Palace is nearby.
