Betaproteobacteria

Neisseria gonorrhoeae ( order Neisseriales ) Staining by Gram's method, light microscopy

Betaproteobacteria ( β - Proteobacteria also ) refers to a class in the phylogenetic system of bacteria, which have been prepared on the basis of the base sequence of the 16S ribosomal ribonucleic acid ( 16S rRNA). The phylum (the tribe ) Proteobacteria are divided into five classes Alphaproteobacteria to Epsilonproteobacteria. All representatives of this tribe are gram- negative.

Among the Betaproteobacteria are the orders

  • Neisseriales Tønjum 2006
  • Nitrosomonadales Garrity et al. 2006
  • " Procabacteriales "
  • Rhodocyclales Garrity et al. 2006 as well as numerous, yet not sure unclassified isolates.

Important examples are to be found among others in the genera Neisseria, Simonsiella, Burkholderia, Achromobacter, Alcaligenes, Sphaerotilus, Nitrosomonas, Spirillum, Thiobacillus and Gallionella.
