The Hunger Steppe ( Kazakh Betpak - Dala for evil plane) is a semi-desert steppe in central Kazakhstan.

It is bounded on the north by Ulutau Mountains and the Kazakh threshold, to the east of Lake Balkhash and the south by the mostly dry river valley Tschüi, behind which the Mujunkum desert followed. In the southwest it rests against the depression Asikol, behind the river Syr Darya runs in the southeast-northwest direction. In the West, the Hungry Steppe goes into the desert Aralkarakum.

By Hungry Steppe extend in a north-south direction, only two roads, namely the A344 from Schesqasghan after Kyzylorda and the M36 on the shores of Lake Balkhash from Karaganda to Almaty. A railway line also results from Karaganda to the city schools.

In the center of the Hunger Steppe is an uninhabited desert area the size of Hungary, through the lead no roads. In the western part of the Hungry Steppe is the salt lake Karakojun, which is the only lake in the area. In the Hunger Steppe of Salzkrautbilch or desert sleeper lives ( Selevinia betpakdalaensis ).
