Biathlon World Championships 1988

The 5th Biathlon World Championships Women found from February 29 to March 6, 1988 in Chamonix, France. Because of the held in the same year Winter Olympics no world championship bouts were performed at the men. The last time it was for the women from the men separate world championships since 1989, the World Championships for men and women are held in common.

After German athletes were in the previous year for the first time at the start, Petra Schaaf won the gold medal in the sprint the first medal for the Federal Republic of Germany in the women's biathlon at all. The first time was neither of the two gold medals in the sprint and single race with the Soviet Union, which remained unbeaten for the fifth time in the relay competition.
