Biberist is a municipality in the district water office of the canton of Solothurn in Switzerland.

Geography

Biberist located 447 m above sea level. M., 3 km south-southeast of Canton main town of Solothurn (air line). The industrial community extends to the bottom and Emme on the village stream, the lower reaches of the Beaver creek, on the northeast edge of the Molassehöhen of Bucheggberg and at the edge of the flood plain of the river Emme, in the Solothurn Plateau.

With an area of ​​12.4 km ² Biberist is the largest municipality in the district water office. With 8125 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012) Biberist one of the larger municipalities in the canton of Solothurn. Of the residents 87.4 % are German, 3.6 % and 2.3 % Italian- speaking Serbo-Croatian (as of 2000). The population of Biberist increased during the 20th century continuously, with particularly strong growth rates observed during the 1950s. After peaking at around 7800 inhabitants in the beginning of the 1970s, a slight decline in population was recorded. Economy

Biberist was until the second half of the 19th century, mainly coined by farming village. The water power of the beaver brook was used for the operation of a mill since the 15th century. On a side channel of the river Emme were from 1747 onwards, an oil mill, a saw from 1757 and from 1776 a powder mill. The latter in 1805 was destroyed by an explosion, but afterwards rebuilt until the operation was discontinued in 1845. History

The territory of Biberist was inhabited very early. The earliest evidence of human presence date back to the Neolithic, when a settlement was built on the mountain Altis.
