Bief

Bief is a commune in the French department Doubs in the Franche -Comté.

Geography

Bief is 362 m, 4 km west of Saint- Hippolyte and about 21 km south of the city of Montbéliard (air line). The village is located in the Jura, in a valley widening of the Doubs at the mouth of the village Bach Bief, between the heights of Lomont in the north and in the south of Fleurey.

The area of ​​3.81 km ² municipal area includes a portion of the French Jura. The northern boundary runs along the Doubs, it flows westward through a maximum of 500 meters wide, flat Talniederung. Below Bief he draws a bow and then turns northward to Montbeliard. From the river, the municipality's area extends southward over the Talniederung and the adjacent steep, predominantly forested and partially traversed by bands of rock slopes up to the edge of the heights of Saussaye and Neuvier. Here the highest elevation of Bief is achieved with 660 m. The lower half of the watershed of Bief belongs to the municipality.

Neighboring communities of Bief are Noire Fontaine and Liebvillers in the north, Saint- Hippolyte in the east, the south and Fleurey Les Terres de Chaux and Dampjoux in the West.

History

In the Middle Ages Bief belonged to the dominion of Châtillon- sous- Maîche. Together with the Franche -Comté reached the village with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678 to France.

Attractions

Population

With 111 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011) Bief is one of the smallest municipalities of the department of Doubs. Throughout the 20th century, the population moved always in the range 90-145 people.

Bief was until well into the 20th century a predominantly by agriculture ( livestock and dairy farming, some arable and fruit ) embossed village.
