Big Sandy is a town in Upshur County in the U.S. state of Texas in the United States of America. Big Sandy is the only Dry City in Upshur County and the inhabitants supply themselves in the adjoining Smith and Wood County with alcoholic beverages.

Geography

The city is located in northeast Texas, north of Big Sandy Creek, at the intersection of U.S. Highways 80 and Texas State Route 155 and Highway ( Farm Road ) in 2911, in the southeast corner of Upshur County, is in the east around 80 km from Louisiana and has a total area of 4.3 km ², of which 0.1 km ² water surface. The distance to Dallas in the west is about 190 km.

History

A first small settlement at the site of the present city was formed around 1870. 1873 moved the Texas and Pacific Railway their tracks in this area and in 1880 the Tyler Tap, also a railway company, its rails along the Big Sandy Creek. At the junction of the two railway lines, a station was established, the Big Sandy Switch was named. It was developed in the following years a small settlement, which later became the town of Big Sandy was.

The first post office and two general stores were opened in 1875 and until 1885 had been the settlement of around 500 inhabitants. By 1900 opened up more hotels and restaurants. Around 1915, Big Sandy had two banks, a weekly newspaper and a market for cotton. On June 21, 1926 Big Sandy was registered as a town and the population grew to 1933 to 850 inhabitants.

Demographic data

According to the census of 2000, there were 1,288 people in 532 households and 342 families. The population density was 303.2 inhabitants per km ² ( 786.8/mi ²). Ethnically, the population itself is composed of 81.75 % White, 12.89 % African American, 0.39 % Native American, 1.16 % Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander residents from the and 2.95 % from other ethnic groups. Approximately 0.85% are descended from two or more races and 3.49 % of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 532 households 32.7 % had children under the age of 18 living with them. 47.4 % were married couples living together. 13.2% were single mothers and 35.7 % were non-families. 34.4 % of all households were single-person households, and 17.9% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.42 and the average family size is 3.11.

28.0% of the population were under 18 years old, 8.7 % from 18 to 24, 26.6 % 25-44, 19.3% from 45 to 64, and 17.5 % who were 65 years or older. The average age was 36 years. For every 100 females of all ages were 86.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, 78.5 males.

The median income for a household was $ 25,284, and the median income for a family $ 34,107. Males had a median income of $ 26,083 versus $ 21,071 for females. The per capita income was $ 14,989. 17.8 % of the population and 16.4 % of families are below the poverty line. Of which 24.9 % have children under the age of 18 and 15.6 % of those 65 or older.
