Bill George (academic)

William " Bill" W. George ( born 14 September 1942) is an American manager and bestselling author. He was CEO of Medtronic and is a professor of management practice at Harvard Business School ( HBS).

Life

George studied Industrial Engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology (Bachelor of Science) and Harvard University ( MBA). He then worked for the United States Department of Defense as well as the company Honeywell International and Litton Industries. In 1989 he went to Medtronic; In 1991 he was CEO there and 1996 Chairman of the Board. He currently serves on the Board of Directors of Exxon Mobil, Mayo Clinic and Goldman Sachs; previously at Novartis and Target Corporation. He also serves on the Boards of Trustees of the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, the World Economic Forum and the Guthrie Theater. He was from 2002 to 2003 professor at the International Institute for Management Development and the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne, as well as executive -in-residence at Yale University. In 2004 he became professor of management practice at Harvard Business School. He writes, inter alia, for the Wall Street Journal, Business Week, Fortune, and the Harvard Business Review. George is a member of the National Academy of Engineering. According to PBS ( 2012) he is among the Top 25 Business Leaders of the Past 25 Years. The Academy of Management (AOM ) named him Executive of the Year -2001 and the National Association of Corporate Directors ( NACD ) elected him Director of the Year 2001-02. He is an honorary doctor of Georgia Tech, the Bryant University and the University of St. Thomas
