Birkenau in the Odenwald is a municipality of the district mountain road in the south of Hessen ( Germany ). She has the nickname " The village of sundials ".

Geography

Geographical Location

The municipality is located in Weschnitztal in the Odenwald about 25 km north of Heidelberg and about 20 km northeast of Mannheim. It is located on the B 38 and is drained by the Weschnitz.

Neighboring communities

Birkenau is bordered to the north by the municipality Morlenbach, in the east on the community Abtsteinach, in the south on the community Gorxheimertal and to the west by the cities of Weinheim and Hemsbach (both Rhein- Neckar-Kreis in Baden- Württemberg).

Climate

History

Birkenau was first mentioned in 795 AD in the Lorsch Codex documented as a cella of the monastery of Lorsch. To possess the Lorsch monastery in 1232 it fell under the rule of the Archbishopric of Mainz. The districts Hornbach and Balzenbach other hand, were kurpfälzisch so that they belonged after the Reformation different creeds. In 1552 the town hall was built, in 1771, the castle of the Lords of Wambolt Umstadt.

By 1964 the population had grown to over 5,000. In 1967 the community was recognized as a resort and 1979 as a health resort, has the predicate health resort because of the low tourism but not re-applied. However, the place is still the resort. 1995 celebrated the 1200 anniversary of Birkenau.

Incorporations

In the course of municipal reform in Hesse, the formerly independent communities Kallstadt ( 1 July 1970), Hornbach, travel ( both on 31 December 1970 ), were Löhrbach and low Lieber Bach (both at 31 December 1971 ) on a voluntary basis by Birkenau incorporated. For the territory of the former municipalities by statute main local town council and mayor districts were built with the exception of Kallstadt. This is part of the local Kern County community and Kallstadt. The boundaries of the local districts since then follow the district boundaries.

Mayor

The mayor is elected by direct vote for a term of six years. The elections of 2009 won Helmut Morr (independent) in the run-off election on February 1 with 3330 votes ( 68.8 %) ( supported by CDU and SPD) around 1509 votes (31.2% ) for Peter Zschippig. The turnout was 62.2 %. Since 21 May 2009, he is the successor of Ingrid Berbner ( FWG ).

The meaning of the coat of arms whose style elements can be partly traced back to center seals and landmarks to the 16th century is unclear. A popular weekend destination and rest area for hikers is Buchklingen.

In Schnorr Bach, a winter sports area is a downhill slope (450 meters long) and ski lift. In summer, the international FIS Camp is held annually for children and adolescents as well as the Germany Cup in grass skiing for 15 years. It previously launched grass skier from Austria, Czech Republic, Italy, Germany and Japan. It is installed floodlights.

Traffic

Birkenau is in the range of the transport association Rhein- Neckar and the Rhine- Main Transport Association. The Birkenau railway station is located on the Weschnitztalbahn Weinheim -Fürth (Odenwald ). Nature

Around Birkenau there are several nature reserves and a significant number of hiking trails.
