Black Ox Orkestar

The Black Ox Orkestar is a quartet from Montreal that plays European Jewish folk music. It was founded in 2000.

In their self-image make the musicians " New Jewish Music " with a nostalgic touch.

You try to use the typical instruments of the Jewish folk ballads. For this they write new political texts in Yiddish and operate free of recordings of Yiddish and nichtjiddischen traditional music. These include musical influences from the Balkans, Central Asia, Eastern Europe and from the Arab region.

Thierry Amar is a member of Godspeed You! Black Emperor and A Silver Mt Zion. He is represented on numerous recordings and live musical projects in Montreal, is becoming more famous in the jazz and Inprovisations scene, and at the moment he studied with Jacques Beaudoin at the Montreal Symphony Orchestra. He founded the recording studio Hotel2Tango, where he works as a sound engineer.

Scott Levine Gilmore studied Yiddish literature at McGill University in Montreal. He is currently part of A Silver Mt Zion and Friends of Cush ( with composer Sam Shalabi ). Founder of the musical project Luftmentsch Fareyn ( Josh Dolgin ). He was a founding member of Le Petit Theatre de líAbsolu, a puppet theater for children that made a tour of Israel and the West Bank in the fall of 2003.

Gabriel Levine played in bands such as Sackville, Friends of Cush ( with Sam Shalabi ) and in wild Lawns. He works in Vermont for the Bread and Puppet Theater and is also the founder of Le Petit Theatre de l' Absolu.

Jessica Moss plays her instrument ever since she was five years old. You already broke their classical samples from very early to search for other impressions and genres. She has played in many bands and projects in Montreal and have been countless times guest player in bands from Montreal and Toronto. She also plays at A Silver Mt Zion, is a member of Broken Social Scene and makes film music.
