Black Uhuru

The band Black Uhuru, founded in Kingston, Jamaica in 1974 is one of the most important representatives of the second generation roots reggae. The word Uhuru is the East African language Swahili borrowed and means freedom. With their music, the band wanted to shake up the Jamaican people and recall his African roots.

Band History

Initially, the band from Derrick " Duckie " Simpson (born June 24, 1950 in Kingston), Rudolph " Garth " Dennis was (born December 2, 1949 ) and Don Carlos (born Eurin Spencer, born June 29, 1952 ). While Garth Dennis and Don Carlos started his own solo projects, Duckie Simpson has played more under the name Black Uhuru. To this end, he enlisted Michael Rose and Errol Nelson, which were replaced by the later return of Don Carlos ' and further reshuffles again and started his own solo projects. Their most successful period had Black Uhuru in the 1980s. The vocal trio consisted of Duckie Simpson, Michael Rose and Puma Jones, one originating from South Carolina social worker who helped with her high soprano to the characteristic sound of the band. They were supported by the powerful rhythm section Sly & Robbie Sly Dunbar on drums and Robbie Shakespeare on bass and another of Jamaica's most sought-after instrumentalists. Sly Dunbar and Robbie Shakespeare produced the best-known singles, General Penitentiary, Guess Who 's Coming to Dinner, Plastic Smile, Shine Eye Gal and Abortion. The song Abortion, a song about abortion, has been indexed in Jamaica.

With the album Anthem 1985 they won the first ever Grammy Award for Best Reggae Recording. By 1995, they were nominated six times more for this category.
