Blepharitis

Blepharitis (Greek blepharon " Lid", suffix- itis " inflammation " ) is the medical term for inflammation of the eyelids. Frequently it occurs, together with an inflammation of the conjunctiva on (conjunctivitis) and then as blepharoconjunctivitis. Blepharitis may occur as a result of general skin disorders, but also arise in the eyelid itself. A blepharitis can be described accurately, if only parts of the eyelid are affected or the cause is known (eg meibomianitis: inflammation of the meibomian gland, blepharitis angularis: inflammation of the canthus, hordeolum: barley grain, staph infection of Zeis glands ).

Symptoms

The eyelids and eyelashes are glued (usually after sleeping ), there is a foreign body sensation. It is characterized by a red, burning or itchy, swollen eyelid. The lashes can fail ( Madarosis ).

Molding

  • Dandruff blepharitis ( blepharitis squamosa ): Causes are a oversecretion of Liddrüsen, a scaly dermatitis ( seborrheic dermatitis), dry air, dust or smoke.
  • Infectious blepharitis: caused by bacteria such as staphylococcus, herpes and other viruses, rarely ticks or lice. Since the lid margin is always wet, it offers a good environment for a variety of germs. To prove an infectious blepharitis, a swab has to be made.
  • Allergic blepharitis: Can also be caused by other allergens by cosmetics or eye ointments or drops, however. For drugs, it is usually the preservatives contained in that are not tolerated. Typical of an allergic blepharitis is spread all over the eyelid broad, balloon-like, itchy swelling.
  • Ocular rosacea ( Ophthalmorosazea ): occasionally manifests itself in childhood, with or without skin lesions of rosacea.

Therapy

A good Lidrandhygiene here is most important. The eye must be kept clean at all times to contact lenses or eye cosmetics should be avoided in any case. To remove the crusts, it is best to warm water or a soaked cotton pad in olive oil. To initially to avoid drug treatment, you can try using warm compresses to liquefy the oily secretions in the obstructed glands. With a careful lid massage, in the direction of the eyelashes, you can try to push the secretions from the glands. If the symptoms are not subsided after a few days, an ophthalmologist should be consulted. If the blepharitis infectious, they should be treated with antibiotics or antivirals. Is she allergic conditionally, for a certain time cortisone can be used.
