The father of 18 -year-old Megan Denning leaves the family. His child support payments stay out often what brings Megan's mother in financial difficulties. Megan's younger sister Lily is mentally unbalanced; she is starving in the hope of becoming an angel. Lily is admitted to a hospital where she jumps from a window and trying to fly. Here she dies.

Megan befriends with her English teacher to write a novel. He persuaded her to participate in a competition of young poets. Megan sleeping with the teacher, but they disappointed. In the end she moves in with her father.

Reviews

The lexicon of international film wrote that the film was a " compassionate, soulful played drama about adolescence, loneliness and self-discovery ." He was " effectively staged " and keep bein ' well -developed characters. " Bruckner play the lead role of " insistently between helplessness and vulnerability ."

Kenneth Turan wrote in the Los Angeles Times of 2 May 2003, the film has some weaknesses such as the schematic plot, the " melodramatic twists " leg hold. He was still an " intimate, contemplative drama" with " memorable representations ".

Karen Moncrieff received in 2002 a prize of the Woodstock Film Festival and was nominated for the Grand Prix of Americas of the World Film Festival and for his special prize of the American Film Festival in Deauville. Agnes Bruckner as the lead actress Karen Moncrieff and as a scriptwriter were nominated for the Independent Spirit Award in 2004.

The film was shot in Dayton (Ohio ), Fairborn ( Ohio) and in Yellow Springs (Ohio ). His cost of production was estimated at one million U.S. dollars. The world premiere took place on 11 January 2002 at the Sundance Film Festival, the numerous other film festivals followed, among others, on 10 September 2002, the Toronto International Film Festival. On 25 April 2003, the film came in the selected cinemas in the United States, in which he grossed about 464 thousand U.S. dollars.
