History

The Rhenish Railway Company received on March 5, 1856, the concession for the construction and operation of the whole railway line Düren - Schleiden. This track was requested by the cottage industry in the Eifel, in order to sell ores and bring along coal from the Inderevier and worm area can. On October 6, 1864, the flare path Düren - Euskirchen inaugurated. The steam locomotive Roer drew seven cars from Euskirchen to Düren.

The further built Eifel circuit then proceeded past the original target of Schleiden. 1875, the section was Kalscheuren - Euskirchen completed. In 1880 the line commissioned Euskirchen - Bonn parallel to the nationalization of the Rhenish Railway Company by the Kingdom of Prussia.

At that time the volume of traffic is reflected in the number of tickets sold in 1905:

First time in years rolled on July 6, 1997 again a special train from Düren to Euskirchen. But in 1998 the section Distelrath - Zuelpich was shut down.

Takeover by the Duerener circular path

On 19 December 2002, Düren circular path of the Deutsche Bahn bought the 310,000 m² large track layout from Düren to Zuelpich for the price of 860,000 euros.

The Rurtalbahn GmbH since its founding in 2003, the operator of the section between Düren and the industrial siding of the Smurfit Kappa paper Zuelpich in Zuelpich station. Several times a week are driven by Düren Kokszüge the company Kappa.

Temporarily place in the sequence of persons on Sundays and public holidays in the summer months up to and including October. It this was a connection between Düren and Euskirchen in the three-hour clock with modern Regio sprinters Rurtalbahn; planned were also trips to historic railcars. Objective of the Sunday rides was not the operation of a railway museum, but the reactivation of the regional rail. These trips were special trips IG Rurtalbahn and not incorporated into the GCU or VRS tariff, but they were the foundation of today's flare Express.

The section Zuelpich - Euskirchen stood still for sale, but have not been sold and is still owned by DB Netz. The route closure is no longer up for grabs because of the nature of the relief Voreifelbahn and flare railway freight transport for the journey Bonn - Cologne - Aachen was recognized and a route support contract has been concluded.

Reactivation efforts - The flare Express

In September 2006, the line experienced a brief revival. With a special train from Zuelpich school, which was provided with a drive along Düren, was a transport of approximately 1,000 people with a train of considerable length. From platform 2 of the station Zuelpich the local high school started a special trip Zuelpich - St. Goar and back. Was bred from the train diesel locomotives DB Class 218 in double traction.

In 2007, found after re- closure announcement of Deutsche Bahn for the section Zuelpich - Euskirchen back specials on the entire route instead. The working group Boerde train IG Rurtalbahn has been able to perform all special tourist trips. First time in over 20 years wrong on 3 October 2007 again a continuous train of the relation Düren - Zuelpich - Euskirchen - Bonn central station and back, on the route between Euskirchen and Bonn Hbf as Durchlaufzug without intermediate stops. Zuelpich - - Düren - on 1 and 15 December 2007, the continuous connection Euskirchen was Aachen Hbf offered.

In December 2007, the total distance was the new course book number 12474th After 2007, the entry in the timetable and the re- drawing of the route in the route map to the course book was. In June 2008, the sponsoring organization founded People's Railway. Using the neighboring municipalities, the State of NRW, the transport companies and the volunteers carried out the driving operation of the flare Express according to the principles of a civil bus ( People's Railway ).

For the 30 and 31 August 2008, the Working Group flange rail IG Rurtalbahn could reach eV together with the city Zuelpich as ordering a reactivation of the railway line for two days. On both days drove trains every hour to Euskirchen and in two- hour intervals to Düren - Sundays twice as fast train to Aachen Central Station. As part of the EuRegionale 2008 as a showcase company for a possible reactivation of the State Garden Show 2014 was made possible.

In 2010, the railcar of the flare Express inverted (type RegioSprinter ) every 14 days, on Sundays at 4 -hour intervals between Düren and Euskirchen. Since the timetable of 2011 is driven every Sunday during the summer season (May to October ), and also in 4 -hour intervals. These trips can also be used with tickets to the GCU and the VRS. Bicycles and dogs are carried free of charge. Since December 2011, the flare Express is therefore also listed in the VRS rail network.

However, a small setback in the efforts was the decommissioning of the breakpoint Nemmenich by DB Netz AG in May 2012. The breakpoint could not be operated from the flange Express ever since. This breakpoint was however technically renewed by the citizens associations and re-opened under management of the city Zuelpich in July 2013.

Route description

The route runs through flat, sparsely populated and agriculturally coined Bördeland. Significant engineering structures are therefore not available. Reception building there are in the ( former ) Out and Keep boys home, Vettweiß, Zuelpich, Dürscheven and Euskirchen.

Düren

About this railway line Düren is connected with its island station since September 6, 1841, the railway network. Since then, the Düren Central Station is the starting point for seven railway lines: Here there are connections to the distances in the direction of Aachen and Cologne, as well as to Rurtalbahn (RB 21) between the Düren station and Linnich or Heimbach, use the many commuters. However, a direct passage of Linnich to Heimbach is not possible. Furthermore, the flare path towards Euskirchen is regularly traveled in passenger and freight transport on the weekend to Zuelpich. From the nearby branch at Düren the driveway to the garage Rurtalbahn in safflower Rath runs. The earlier route towards Neuss Sindelsdorf in 1995 shut down and dismantled. The end of this section ( and the curl web prior to decommissioning) was located on two stub tracks directly on the reception building. Today the tracks are located in the area and fenced. On the north side of the station Rurtalbahn are some freight tracks available. Of this total freight transport is handled in Düren station, after the Federal Railroad in his time separately from this task. Today the station is operational center of Düren in Düren circular path, after taking over the goods handled by DB Cargo on 1 April 2000. Because of the earlier major importance Dürens for the railroad was here a long time in an easterly direction ( Cologne) in front of the station entrance, a railway depot Düren, which was closed and demolished in 1986. In addition to the main track here are two more tracks available, for example, allow the conversion of locomotives for special rides. At the south end of the station main track ends at a buffer stop. There formerly was the site of the goods station, which was also removed due to lack of traffic.

In addition to the Duerener circular path existed long another railway company with the Duerener Eisenbahn AG. It operated from 1893 a narrow gauge line from Düren in a northwesterly direction to the birch village, which was later extended in stages to indene. After the passenger always continued to decline, was the setting of rail operations in 1965, as an important part of freight transport was omitted. The 1841 opened on the railway line between Cologne and Aachen - Düren island Düren is the beginning of the route of the flare path. Until the cessation of the flange rail, 1983, the train always started from track 17. Also in Düren began earlier the railway line Düren- Neuss, also is the station on the railroad tracks Jülich -Düren and Düren- Heimbach. He's home station Rurtalbahn GmbH, which is north of the reception building owned by the railway facilities.

Distelrath

In Distelrath the block post items 1 Meanwhile stood at the kilometer 1.8, this was used as a meeting of the IG Rurtalbahn until 2007, the signal box was purchased in Zuelpich. Distelrath never even had its own breakpoint, but to get a breakpoint in the case of a reactivation of the distance rail passenger transport ( regional rail ).

The transport company founded in 1908 Düren orbit since its inception the operational headquarters (formerly the tram, now for the buses and rail vehicles) in safflower Rath. The company is located at the Cologne road and track is technically from Düren on the unloading, the flange reached by train. In the 1970s, the tanks were (now Automeile ) here loaded on portable ramps on railroad cars and shipped to maneuvers, etc. from the tank barracks in Düren. Thus, the rides were superfluous through the city center to the concrete loading dock at Düren. It avoided so much traffic delays through the armored columns. The station building is no longer used since 1982. In 1988, the second main track between Düren and boys home was dismantled and disassembled just as the second track in the boys home station. Until a few years ago the first floor in the reception building was rented as an apartment, today the building is owned by the Buir - Bliesheimer agricultural cooperative. Next to the station today breakpoint is Bubenheimer Playland. Since 2010, stop here every Sunday back in the summer passenger trains of the flare path.

This breakpoint had a few hundred meters further towards the post Vettweiß 6 He served for securing the local beschrankten railroad crossing by Present staff.

Vettweiß

From north to south the flare path crosses the area Vettweiß. The breakpoint is located at kilometer 12.96 and 1864 taken together with the track opening in operation. In the northern area of the station, there is a beet loading dock, the only relic of earlier transport. The corresponding loading track was removed. The station building was sold, renovated and is used privately. In the garden of the building there is still a piece of track.

Other than that, with the locomotives of the German Federal Railroad was performed. 1995 presented the Zuelpicher Stadtwerke a the operation of the railway industry. From 1996 to 2002, the operation was carried out exclusively by the German railroad, then the railroad company operating in Bergisch- Märkischen space (EBM ) to 2006 freight from Zuelpich to Euskirchen. In addition, since 2003 Smurfit Kappa Zuelpich paper in Zuelpich of Rurtalbahn GmbH is supplied with lignite. This contract for coal supply brings a annual volume of 38,000 tonnes of brown coal on the tracks between Düren and Zuelpich. For the operation of the company Kappa therefore new crossovers had to be created. There were and are still industry connections to former Zuelpicher briquette (Victor Rolff and today Wallenius Wilhelmsen ), for paper mill winner (later Zuelpich paper today Smurfit Kappa Zuelpich paper), the company Mundt ( dismantled ) to the Zuelpicher stoneware works ( dismantled ) and the company Liqui Pack ( removed), Cerestar GmbH (wheat products, siding dismantled ) and Albis Plastic GmbH.

Track systems

From Düren proceeds according to the station entrance next to the main track a side track to the train station, through which the railway sidings of Zuelpich KAPPA paper and an auto wholesale (former briquette ) are served. After the end of the siding for trains to cross the border between infrastructure Rurtalbahn and DB Netz, then followed by the actual station Zuelpich with platform and sidings. In the area of the entrance from the direction of Euskirchen is still another, currently unused, connection for operation of two industrial companies.

Present and future

After setting the movement of persons has been quiet in Zuelpich station. The station building is still standing next to the rented storage shed. The station building in Zuelpich station is rented, it is but owned by Deutsche Bahn. The railway operating systems of the elongated station Zuelpich include numerous tracks that are only passable in part. The loading tracks and track 1 are separated by expansion course. The former signal box Zf, designed as a mechanical interlocking has been renovated and has been used since 2007 by the IG Rurtalbahn as clubhouse, the entire railway operating systems are switched to manual operation. Because since 2006 keeps on Sundays and holidays the flange Express in Zuelpich station in the summer months, the platform was renewed in the meantime.

Nemmenich

The breakpoint Nemmenich was built by Nemmenich 1955 at 21.26 km directly on the western outskirts. The breakpoint, which was shut down in May 2012 by DB Netz AG and therefore can not be operated from the flange Express, was on the small path at Helgeland. The wooden platform edge is still intact, just a small post hut. The breakpoint Nemmenich was shut down unexpectedly by DB Station & Service in May 2012. Also, the crimp Express could no longer hold. Background was a cost-effectiveness analysis. For 2013, the reopening of the stopping point is planned. The structural re- fitting out, inter alia, with a new platform edge of concrete parts was initiated by the citizens of clubs per track flare. The breakpoint was reopened in July 2013 and is available for shipments to the state garden show available.

Dürscheven

Until the closure of the railway in 1983 Dürscheven had its own railway station, this was built in 1880 at kilometer 23.873. The renovated station building of the railway station Dürscheven is privately owned and still has the station sign. Because of private ownership of the breakpoint will not currently be approached from flaring Express. Once reactivated, the flange rail for passenger transport, a new breakpoint has to be built. At the former station is still the former two-pronged expansion of the flare path to realize a bridge has to date a track remainder of the second track. In the area of the station and there were a connection to the situated opposite the train station country store, which is, however, no longer used. The branch points and the overgrown track remains are still available today.

Elsig

Elsig never had a breakpoint, although the route runs directly through the town. At kilometer 27.27, there was a crossing keeper's house for a railroad crossing. Elsig had formerly the function of a branching point, because there branched off a connecting curve to the Eifel route to Trier. The distance between the branch point and Elsig Euenheim at the Eifel track existed 1923-1924 and 1942-1949, where she was decommissioned in 1945. It was used exclusively for freight.

1960, the route between Elsig and Euskirchen has changed. The route followed a piece of the former course of the connecting curve southwards, and then to swing on the Eifel circuit on the Ingrid hut, which was awarded a rail connection to an alternate connection point. This branch is located at km 28.7, but is unused.

In a reactivation of the railway passenger on the flare path is provided, set a breakpoint in Elsig.

Euskirchen

The Euskirchen train station is the terminus of the rail flange with 29.816 km of track. He was taken in 1864 with the track in operation. Since the Eifel line was opened only in 1871, the flare path was initially the only rail link in the Eifel, in route continuation towards Mechernich had to be made in Euskirchen head always. Later, the trains of the flange Railroad ran until its closure on a track 47, the flange Express stops today on track 4
