Borovichi

Borowitschi (Russian Боровичи ) is the second largest city in the Russian Novgorod Oblast. The town has 53,690 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010 ).

Geography

The town is located 194 km from Veliky Novgorod in the northern foothills of the Valdai Hills. In addition Borowitschi lies on the River MSTA and also represents the largest town on the waterway dar.

History

1495, the village was mentioned for the first time. 1770 Borowitschi was charged by the Empress Catherine II to the city. Due to the fact that the place is located on the MSTA, many residents worked in the inland navigation, as the river was an important link between central Russia and the Baltic Sea.

Due to the advent of the railways in the 19th century lost the MSTA as a transport route in importance and thus Borowitschi. 1855 originated in the region, many brick factories. Today, as a large part of the population in the brick manufacturing.

During the Second World War was in Borowitschi the POW camp 270, where from 1944 to 1947, several thousand prisoners were housed. On a POW cemetery in the part bearing (7) 270/1 about 3,000 dead were usually buried in mass graves. The camp was disbanded in 1953.
