The airport Boryspil (Ukrainian Міжнародний аеропорт " Бориспіль "; Russian Международный аэропорт Борисполь ) is the largest international airport of the Ukrainian capital Kiev. He is the main airport of the country and is situated 29 km east of the city center.

Other airports nearby include the smaller airport Zhulyany which is mainly used for domestic flights and also serves as a base of low cost airline Wizz Air and the north-west freight and business airport Kiev Hostomel.

History

The history of the airport begins with the decision N1832 of Ministers of the Ukrainian SSR of 22 June 1959 to open a civil airport on the site of a former military airfield.

The first scheduled flight Moscow - Kiev - Moscow took place on 1 July 1959. This flight was performed with a Tupolev Tu- 104, which carried 100 passengers and 1600 kg of cargo. More scheduled flights were followed from August 15, 1960 starting with the line Leningrad - Kiev - Leningrad. The Kiev airport was equipped first airport on the territory of the USSR in 1979 with an instrument landing system. As early as March of that year could be carried out here landings of category II (CAT II). This sometimes earned him a reputation as a testing ground of civil aviation.

Passenger terminal building

Despite the economic crisis and ailing state finances of the airport for the European Football Championship in 2012 was expanded. Are in operation as at the beginning of June 2012 five terminals for passenger check-in:

  • Terminal A is for domestic flights
  • Terminal B is for international flights
  • Terminal C for VIP passengers
  • Terminal F for Ukraine International Airlines
  • Terminal D opened May 28, 2012

The newly built Terminal D was opened on 28 May 2012. During the European Football Championship, it should first act as a " hub " for the EM- tourists, and later to Ukraine International Airlines and the international airlines relocating to the terminal and collect low cost airlines in their place in Terminal F. Terminal D is, however, one kilometer from the existing check-in areas. Therefore, shuttle buses will travel between the buildings.

More Terminalbauten are planned, to be built by 2020 for the Airbus A380, the terminals E and G.
