Town, castle and lordship Boxberg went in 1287 to the Knights of Wölchingen who had a major subsidiary ( Upcoming ) here. The Bishop of Würzburg Berthold II von Sternberg thus exchanged this Hochstift feudal castle against pig mountain. The Order transferred the management of his Coming ( Komtursitz ) to Boxberg in the subsequent period. In 1381 the St. John Boxberger sold their possessions to the Knights of Rosenberg.

1523 in the fight against the outlawed Melchior von Boxberg, the castle was destroyed by the Swabian League for the second time. The property fell again to the Palatinate. Knights Albrecht von Rosenberg in 1548 came again into the possession of Boxberg, 1561 final to sell him to the Palatinate. For Boxberg was a long reign of the Palatinate ( 1561-1802 ), separated by pledges to the diocese of Würzburg ( 1691-1732 ) and the German Order in Mergentheim ( 1732-1740 ).
