Geography

Buckten lies between two valley slopes at the foot of Hauenstein, in the Homburg at the so-called Hauenstein line.

The neighboring communities are (from north clockwise) Rümlingen, Häfelfingen, Läufelfingen, Känerkinden and Wittinsburg.

Coat of arms

The coat of arms of Buckten 1944 officially confirmed by the council. It is divided by a horizontal line into two halves. The upper half shows a golden post horn on a black ground, the bottom half of a black cartwheel on a golden background. The symbols remind of the former importance of Buckten as Passfussort at the foot of Hauenstein. Here additional horses were harnessed to the car for the pass crossing and road tolls collected during fights.

History

Archaeological finds suggest that the colonization of the area had already taken place in voralemannischer time.

The first mention of Buckten dates from 1266 as Butuchon. The name evolved from Butkon ( 1323) on Buttikon to Butken ( 1417 ). The place name is first mentioned in a document as Butuchon in a sales contract dated 18 July 1266th It is believed that the place name can be traced back to the first settlers. 1400 Buckten came under the rule of the city of Basel.
