Geography

The city is located about eight kilometers northeast of Limbach- Oberfrohna and 15 kilometers north of Chemnitz between the valleys of the rivers Mulde and Chemnitz, which flow together north of the community.

History

Today eingemeindeten villages Burkersdorf Göppersdorf, Heiersdorf and Mohsdorf emerged since 1170 as Waldhufen villages. Probably Burgstädt has already been created as a market before Burkersdorfer chapel at the site of today's Burgstädter City Church 1270-1301. The first mention was made in 1378 as "too Burkissdorf before stedil " where the Burgstädt may constitute " stedil " only. The eponymous castle is the Rochsburg only a few kilometers away, also its name to the place Rochlitz. The present spelling of the city name already exists in this way since 1822, when a distinction the city name of Burkersdorf and Burgstädt clearly distinguishable.

Originally, in Burgstädt agriculture as a main occupation. The agricultural products such as barley and flax, were for the industry and commerce of the starting point. The textile industry played a major role in Burgstädt. With the introduction of the mechanical loom, the reputation of the textile industry rose sharply.

1840 took the first post office on its activity and upgraded postal items to the driving post in Hartmann village. 1868 the first telegraph was introduced, and in 1891 it was connected to the telephone network.

Attractions

The city has a well-preserved city center. Attractions include the ensemble with City Church - Seigerturm - local history museum in the market and the town hall, the gymnasium and the "Historical doctor's office ." Along the Mittweidaer street is the recreation area Städts castle, the Wettin grove. In this park there is a pond, a playground, plenty of seating and the Taurastein with the distinctive Taurastein tower. Planned as water and observation tower, it was built in 1912/13, and is 348.6 m above sea level. Today, the 39 m high tower is used as a popular destination and hosts a gallery. Burgstädt lies on the railway line from Chemnitz to Leipzig. This route is served by the Regional Express line RE 6 in each direction every hour between Chemnitz and Leipzig. Furthermore, the inverted line 525 of the City-Bahn Chemnitz between Burgstädt and Chemnitz. The line 525 is to be extended as part of the model by the Chemnitz Chemnitz Central Station through to the Chemnitz city center after the completion of 2013, ongoing renovation work at the Chemnitz Central Station.
