Burrard Street

False Creek

The Burrard Street Bridge, sometimes just Burrard Bridge is a steel truss bridge in the Canadian province of British Columbia. It spans the False Creek, connecting the two parts of the city Kitsilano and West End of Vancouver.

The bridge is heavily traveled and the oldest of the three bridges across False Creek. In average each day to cross approximately 55,000 vehicle, 2,800 cyclists and 2,100 pedestrians bridge.

History

Originally, the bridge connected the Burrard Street on the north bank of the Cedar Street on the south bank. However, shortly after the bridge opened, the street name was continued over the bridge and the name Cedar Street disappeared.

Building

The bridge consists of a plurality of segments. The mean half-timbered part spans while the fairway of False Creek, while the subsequent northern truss segment spans only the riparian area. The central part of the south subsequent truss segment runs over a marina. The two adjoining the Mitteilteil sections are thereby supported in the middle additionally by carrier. While at the northern end of the driveway is done more or less directly to the bridge, a longer ramp must be used for the driveway at the southern end yet.

The middle part is each supported by a steinverkleidetem metal pylon. Above the road this stone cladding was performed elaborate Art Deco- style

Problem cyclists - pedestrians

In the planning and the construction of the bridge foot and cycle paths alongside the roadways were performed according to the prevailing conditions and forecasts. The paths next to the roads have a width of approximately 2.60 meters. Over time, however, the traffic volume has increased significantly. In today approximately 2,800 pedestrians and 2,100 cycling per day, the problems and the number of accidents are considerable.

Since the mid- 1990's, these have increasingly tightened. An extension of the bridge, for example by a lateral attachment of paths is not to enforce from conservation aspects

One approach in 1996 was the closure of a road for the benefit of cyclists. This attempt, however, had already after one week are due to considerable public protest, canceled. Since then, the issue in the municipal election campaign, and also outside of it permanently important.

As another solution has not been found so far is currently reserved the oceanfront path ( with views of English Bay) for pedestrians and the shore-side path ( overlooking the False Creek ) is dedicated to cyclists.

Trivia
