Büyükçekmece is the capital of the district of the Turkish province of İstanbul as well as a district on the European side of İstanbul. Büyükçekmece had according to the last census, 163 140 inhabitants (as of December 2008).

Geography

History

The place Büyükçekmece was founded probably in the 7th century BC as a Greek colony on the banks of river deltas under the name Athyra (after which a titular Athyra is called today ).
