C. W. Ceram

CW Ceram ( born January 20, 1915 in Berlin, † April 12, 1972 in Hamburg; actually Kurt Wilhelm Marek ), was a German journalist, editor of the Rowohlt publishing ( 1945-1952 ) and author who is best known for his works on the archeology. The pseudonym Ceram he made from his name Marek as read from behind anagram to distance themselves from his earlier works.

During World War II, Marek was a member of a propaganda unit.

His 1949 published popular science book Gods, Graves and Scholars ( with the characterizing subtitles Roman archeology ) became a bestseller worldwide. On February 23, 1950, the Rowohlt Verlag announced to have sold around 12,000 copies for the price of 12,00 DM within five weeks. The book has also been translated into 28 languages ​​and has sold about five million copies. Through its easy -to-understand teaching of methods and recent findings, this work of archeology has helped to considerable popularity. Therefore, an endowment founded by the Rheinische Landesmuseum Bonn archaeological Nonfiction Book Ceram Prize was called.

Ceram was married to Hannelore Marek, their son is a painter, illustrator, and paper cutting artist Max Marek (* 1957).
