Caccuri

Caccuri is an Italian town in the province of Catanzaro in Calabria with 1677 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012).

Location and data

Caccuri situated 55 km north-west of Crotone on foothills of the Sila Mountains. The neighboring municipalities are Castelsilano, Cerenzia, Cotronei Roccabernarda, San Giovanni in Fiore (CS ), Santa Severina.

History

The castle was begun in the 6th century. The town developed around the castle.

Attractions

The Castello di Caccuri towers over the town, the castle was built in the 6th century by the Byzantines, and was renewed in the 8th century. The present appearance of the castle took after a battle in 1651, and after a renovation in 1885. Striking feature of the castle is the Torre Mastrigli, it includes a water tank which is fed by an aqueduct. Inside the rooms Polissena Ruffo can be seen (wife of Francesco Sforza, Duke of Milan ).

In the old town part of the building have been preserved from the Middle Ages. Here is also the sanctuary of San Rocco from 1908, it was built during an epidemic in honor of the patron saint.

The church of Santa Maria delle Grazie dates from the 14th century. The frescos from that period have been destroyed. Anstonsten the church is built in the style of the Renaissance.

The Abbey of S. Maria del Soccorso Maria del Rescue was built from 1518 by the Dominicans; later inhabited by the Franciscans ( OFM) the monastery. The monastery church Maria del Rescue, also called Church of the Reformation belongs.
