Café Filho

João Fernandes de Campos Café Filho ( born February 3, 1899 in Natal RN, † February 20, 1970 in Rio de Janeiro) was President of Brazil in the 1950s.

João Café Filho grew up in Natal and then studied law in Recife. Although he did not complete this study, he was able to work due to his practical experience at the Court of Natal.

From 1921 he worked as a journalist in several states of the Northeast of Brazil, and in Rio de Janeiro, then the capital of the country. After he was several times unsuccessfully to enter local elections, in 1930 he took part in the overthrow of Getúlio Vargas Dornelles. After that, he served as Chief of Police of the State of Rio Grande do Norte.

In 1933 he founded his own party, the Partido Nacionalista Social and sat for them two years in Parliament. Because of criticism of the dictatorial leadership style of Getúlio Vargas Dornelles he was for seven years not to be active in politics, and even spent a year in exile in Argentina.

Shortly before the Estado Novo collapsed, Café Filho joined the Partido Republicano Progress Paulista (PRP ). From 1946 he was a member of the Constituent Assembly. After the PRP be renamed United and Partido Social Progress Paulista ( PSP) with other parties, he held the chair of the parliamentary faction of that party.

In the elections of 1950, Café Filho joined the party in an alliance with the Labour Party of Getulio Vargas Dornelles. They drove a an election victory; Vargas and Café Filho was sworn in on January 31, 1946 as President or Vice-President. Although Café Filho was not with all the measures Vargas ' agree, he had not the power to do something about this. In 1954, a scandal brought the President into great tribulation, Café Filho has seen an opportunity to take over the presidency. On August 23, 1954 Café Filho announced the resignation of Getúlio Dornelles Vargas and his own person. With the suicide of Vargas ' August 24, 1954, the president fell under the Constitution, to the Vice President. That same day, Café Filho was sworn in Palácio Laranjeiras.

The short presidential Café Filho was of economic problems - inflation and high budget deficit - dominated. At the same time, elections were imminent. On October 3, 1955 Juscelino Kubitschek won the elections. There were rumors that Café Filho would the president not passed to Kubitschek.

On November 3, 1955 Café Filho suffered a heart attack, causing the President of the Parliament, Carlos Coimbra da Luz, the President took office temporarily. He headed the Office on November 11, 1955 to the Vice President of the Senate, Nereu de Oliveira Ramos on. On November 21, 1955 Café Filho informed the National Congress of wanting to take up his post again. The Parliament, however, aware that Café Filho was still prevented by the exercise of their office and left the office in the hands of Nereu Ramos. The Supreme Court of Brazil confirmed the procedure of Parliament, although Café Filho was not deprived of his presidency.

Café Filho retired from politics and worked from 1957 to 1969 in a real estate company in Rio de Janeiro, as well as auditors.
