Café Schwarzenberg

The Café Schwarzenberg is a coffee shop on the Ringstrasse in Vienna's 1st district Innere Stadt. It is located at Kärntner Ring 17 against the Black Mountain area. Unlike many other famous Viennese coffee houses artists and writers did not count for regular customers. A special feature is the original features from the 19th century.

History

During the construction of the ring road, the couple opened high Leitner 1861, the Café Schwarzenberg. It already was considered a meeting place for personalities from the business world. One of the most famous patrons was the architect Josef Hoffmann, one of the founders of the Wiener Werkstätte. In his coffee house visits many of his designs were.

During the occupation period after 1945, the Red Army used the premises for events. The establishment of the café was damaged by gunfire, the traces of which could still be seen until 1979.

The Café Schwarzenberg today

The Café Schwarzenberg was operated until 1 January 2008 by the Austrian Tourist Office AG and has been part of the sale of the Office Culinary GmbH owned Vivatis group. It has like most ring road cafes over a sidewalk café to the ring road.

The Café Schwarzenberg is frequented by both Viennese and tourists. In addition to cultural events such as readings, exhibitions and concert evenings there are evening coffee house music on several days of the week. During the Vienna ball season the Café Schwarzenberg one of the few cafes early morning hangover breakfast at, in which the ball audience after ball visit (usually about four clock early) can refresh with a goulash and a Seidl beer for the starting tag.
