The Town of Caledon with 13,020 inhabitants ( 2011) located in the municipality Theewaterskloof, district Overberg, Western Cape Province in South Africa. It lies at an altitude of 244 meters above sea level at the foot of the Swartberg Mountains to the N2 main road and the railway line Eersterivier-Protem/Bredasdorp. Cape Town is 120 km and Botrivier 27 kilometers away.

History

The healing power of the springs was known to the Khoikhoi many centuries. After the European settlers came to the Cape, the springs were becoming increasingly popular. The modern development began in 1710, when Ferdinand Appel secured a plot of ten acres and it erected a building for visitors to the healing springs. Gradually developed around the sources of the city. The original name Zwartebergbad 1813 changed in Caledon, after the Earl of Caledon ( Du Pré Alexander) there, Governor of the Cape Colony from 1807 to 1811. A local government in 1840, the city rights were granted on 1 January 1884.
