Calnexin

Calnexin, like its homologue calreticulin lectin of the endoplasmic reticulum (ER). Calnexin is already to be found in the simplest eukaryotes. It is one of the chaperones.

It is bound to the membrane before ( in contrast to the soluble calreticulin ). The activity of the two proteins is dependent on calcium ions, which are present in high concentration in the ER. Calnexin and calreticulin recognize both specific sugar residues of incompletely folded proteins and assist in their folding process.
