Economy
The small town of Calvert gained wide attention when the company Thyssen Krupp built in 2007 for about 4.65 billion U.S. $ (cost after completion) a steel plant for the production of carbon steel and stainless steel on the eastern edge of the city with direct connection to the Tombigbee River, the in the second half of 2010 began operating. The work was to create up to 2700 new jobs and generate more than 3.4 million metric tons of steel per year. Due to declining global demand for steel, however, the plant produces mostly at half capacity, thereby operates at a loss and ThyssenKrupp tries to sell the plant. The plant was purchased in 2013 by a joint venture of competitors ArcelorMittal and Nippon Steel, Sumitomo Metal Industries.
