The Cão Fila de São Miguel is recognized by the FCI breed of dog of the Azores, Portugal ( FCI Group 2, Section 2.1, Standard No. 340).

Origin and History

The Cão Fila de São Miguel is from the main island of the Azores, Sao Miguel. His ancestors probably heard, the Spanish Alano. Due to the relative seclusion, the narrow space of an island and the climatic conditions, a uniform type of dog developed. In 1995 the provisional recognition by the FCI.

Description

A medium to large dog (up to 62 cm, 35 kg), shorthaired, is usually brown or ash-gray brindle, white markings on chest and feet are permitted. In the Azores, the ears are traditionally cropped rounded, so that the dog gets a leopard -like appearance. In the natural state, the ears are medium in size and stand-off hanging.
