Molosser

Molosser is a generic term for many very large and massive dog types. This is often spoken of Mastiff type. It is also the name for a later designated as a breed group of dogs of antiquity.

History

The Molosser were a people of Epirus. Your shepherd dogs were later called Molosser. Representations from the time the people of the Molosser show large stehohrige dogs. It is believed that the black guard dogs, the shepherd dogs were white against it. The large spread of the Molosser is explained that the sacred oak at Dodona was in Epirus and their visitors took away the dogs for breeding. Aristotle describes in his Historia animalium the Epirotic shepherd dog:

" In Molottien the breed of dog that serves as an accompaniment of the herds, by the size and courage against the wild animals from those of other records out. "

Alexander the Great led these dogs with him on his military campaigns.

The Jennings Dog, a sculpture in the British Museum, is regarded as representing historical Molossers. Attempts to bring pictorial representations with other historical traditions are in agreement, however, be viewed with caution.
