Cappella Giulia

The Cappella Giulia is a choir of St. Peter's Basilica in Vatican City. He designed all the liturgical celebrations of the Vatican Chapter musical, except those involving the Pope, in which the papal choir of the Sistine Chapel Choir provides the service. The Capella Giulia consists of two vocal ensembles: mixed choir ( men's and women's voices ) designed the Masses of the chapter and the second vespers of the solemnities; the male chorus designed the Vespers of Sundays in Ordinary Time and at certain festivals.

The name " Giulia" goes back to Pope Julius II, who organized the choir from scratch in 1513.

History

After the end of the Avignon Papacy ( 1377 ) which emerged from the Schola Cantorum papal chapel was initially exclusively for the service to the Pope, so that Peter's Basilica at times had no own singing group. A first attempt to establish a choir, the Pope Sixtus IV undertook in 1480 was unsuccessful. It was not until Julius II succeeded on 19 February 1513 the constitution in Altissimo to establish the Chapel of St Peter's Basilica formal. However, since he already died the following night it took another thirty years, until Pope Paul III. 1534 constitution fulfilled with life.

The choir dedicated to over the following centuries the most sacred vocal polyphony. The choir masters were well-known people such as Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina, Orazio Benevoli and Domenico Scarlatti.

The choir was disbanded in 1979 and temporarily replaced in 1980 by the men's choir Cappella Musicale della Basilica di San Pietro. In 2008, the Cappella Giulia by the Vatican Chapter under the old name was revived. In contrast to the older tradition presently the upper voices ( soprano and alto ) are occupied not with boys but with female voices.
