History

First mentioned in 1159, when Cappeln of Emstek dissolved and established an independent parish. The name means something like Cappeln chapel. Already before 1150 were built in Cappeln the first church that had to be canceled only in 1900. The villages Mittelsten, Bokel, Tenstedt and Osterhausen were first mentioned in 1217 in a document. After lengthy negotiations, the first chapel between the towns Warnstedt Mittelsten and was built in 1889. The place Sevelten is mentioned in a document of the monastery of Corvey inaccurate dated from the period 1000-1090 as " Swiveldon ", later " Svivulten " (1110 ). The first chapel in Sevelten is from this period. The place Schwichteler received in 1929 a Dominican monastery.

Mayor

In the mayoral election of 10 September In 2006, Reinhold Grote of the CDU as the only candidate with 2,211 votes in favor by. He finished his term of office prematurely for reasons of age.

In the direct election on September 22, 2013 Marcus Brinkmann received as individuals against two -partisan candidate 1886 votes ( 50.03 %). A voice was enough for an absolute majority. The turnout was 71.40 percent. His term began on 1 November 2013.

Cappeln is connected to the motorway network via the federal highway B 72 ( European route E 233 ) and the federal motorway A 1 (E 37). From 1914 to 1965 opened up the narrow-gauge railway Vechta - Cloppenburg with stops first in Schwichteler, later in Tenstedt and Cappeln the community.
